YouTube has introduced a new parental supervision feature for teen accounts. The optional tool allows parents to link their YouTube account with their teen’s, providing insights into their activity on the platform.
Once linked, parents will receive notifications about their teen’s actions, such as new video uploads, subscriptions, and comments. They will also get email alerts for major activities like starting a live stream. However, YouTube clarified that linking accounts will not change the content recommended to teens by the algorithm.
The new tools allow parents to monitor when teens upload videos privately or adjust privacy settings. While teens retain control over their channels and privacy, parents can stay informed about their online behaviour.
Developed with input from YouTube’s Youth and Families Advisory Committee, the feature expands on existing controls for children under 13. It’s designed for teens who are legally allowed to use online services but could still benefit from parental guidance.
Starting this week, parents can access these supervision options via YouTube’s Family Center. While account linking offers insights, it doesn’t allow parents to change their child’s age, as YouTube relies on the age provided during account creation.
The feature will roll out globally in the coming weeks. YouTube is also offering resources to help parents guide their teens in responsible content creation.
This launch comes as tech companies face increasing regulation around minors using social media platforms. YouTube serves over 100 million young users monthly through its kids and teen-focused products and controls.
