President Bola Tinubu has underscored the critical role of global collaboration in achieving shared progress and prosperity, emphasizing the success of the China-Africa partnership as a model for sustainable development. Speaking at the opening ceremony of the 2024 Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Beijing, China, President Tinubu highlighted the partnership’s achievements and called for continued cooperation to unlock unprecedented levels of growth.
In his address at the Great Hall of the People, Tinubu hailed the China-Africa relationship, emphasizing that the partnership has been driven by a bold vision for the future. He noted that through mutual collaboration, both regions have made significant strides toward sustainable development and shared prosperity.
“The success of FOCAC and our broader partnership underscores a fundamental truth: global progress is not a zero-sum game. By working together and pursuing win-win solutions, we create pathways for sustainable development. Our partnership reinforces a vision of a multi-polar world where diverse perspectives are embraced, and cooperation is key to solving global challenges,” Tinubu stated.
He further stressed that the China-Africa partnership is grounded in trust, mutual respect, and the pursuit of common goals. He urged both regions to maintain the momentum of their collaboration, particularly in promoting peaceful dialogue, transparent business practices, and diplomatic conflict resolution.
“These values will ensure that the bond between Africa and China continues to deepen for the benefit of future generations. This partnership is not just about shared history but is propelled by a bold collective vision for the future. Together, by pooling our strengths and resources, we can unlock an unprecedented level of growth and development,” Tinubu added.
The Nigerian president’s call for sustained cooperation resonated with earlier speakers, including Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, the co-chair of FOCAC, who highlighted China’s longstanding commitment to Africa through financial support, cultural exchange, and developmental aid.
Since the establishment of FOCAC in 2000, the partnership has weathered various global challenges, demonstrating the strength of mutual respect for sovereignty and non-interference in internal affairs. Tinubu praised China’s consistent role in Africa’s growth and emphasized that the partnership offers a powerful example of what can be achieved through collaboration.
He also noted the growing economic ties between the two regions, pointing out that trade between Africa and China has reached an impressive $280 billion annually. Tinubu expressed optimism about the alignment of China’s Belt and Road Initiative with Africa’s infrastructure development goals, which he believes will further accelerate growth on the continent.
During the summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping reinforced China’s commitment to the China-Africa partnership by announcing $50 billion in financial support, in addition to military aid. Xi pledged another $280 million in financial assistance to African nations and outlined 10 key actions to be implemented over the next three years. These actions cover areas such as trade, health, industrial cooperation, agriculture, green economic development, and common security.
“To implement these 10 partnership actions, the Chinese government will provide RMB 360 billion yuan of financial support over the next three years,” Xi announced. This package includes RMB 210 billion in credit lines, RMB 80 billion in various forms of assistance, and at least RMB 70 billion in investments by Chinese companies in Africa.
Xi Jinping’s proposals also include issuing panda bonds, a financial tool to enhance economic cooperation, and a commitment to elevate China-Africa relations to a new strategic level. He proposed characterizing their bilateral ties as an “all-weather China-Africa community with a shared future for the new era.”
“Thanks to nearly 70 years of tireless efforts from both sides, the China-Africa relationship is now at its best in history. With its future growth in mind, I propose that bilateral relations between China and all African countries be elevated to the level of strategic relations,” Xi Jinping stated.
The summit is viewed as a defining moment for China-Africa relations, with both leaders expressing optimism for continued collaboration. For Africa, the additional financial support and strategic cooperation with China represent a significant opportunity to tackle pressing challenges, including infrastructure deficits, poverty reduction, and industrialization.
Tinubu closed his address by reiterating Nigeria’s commitment to the partnership and urging global leaders to take a similar approach toward collaboration. He emphasized that the spirit of cooperation exemplified by the China-Africa relationship should serve as a model for addressing the world’s most pressing challenges.
