The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has refuted claims of server downtimes amid the surge of Nigerians visiting telecom operators for National Identification Number (NIN) verification. In a statement released on Thursday by the Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, the Commission confirmed that over 10,000 enrollment centres nationwide and abroad are fully operational.

The spike in NIN verification follows the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC) announcement of a final September 15 deadline for linking all SIM cards to NIN.

On Wednesday, reports suggested that telecom operators were facing significant issues verifying subscribers’ NINs due to persistent downtimes on NIMC servers, which were said to be hindering the process.

NIMC, however, denied these reports, asserting that its services are running smoothly without any server issues.

“NIMC wishes to inform the public that National Identification Number (NIN) enrolment, verification, authentication, and other services are operating seamlessly in preparation for the NIN-SIM linkage deadline,” the Commission stated.

The Commission reiterated that its over 10,000 enrollment centres, both in Nigeria and abroad, are open to the public for NIN enrollment and verification. NIMC assured Nigerians that they can visit any centre ahead of the September 14, 2024 deadline for the NIN-SIM linkage.
