The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has called on President Bola Tinubu to urgently reverse the recent increase in the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol. The appeal was made by the Lagos State Chairman of the NMA, Dr. Babajide Saheed, in a statement on Thursday, emphasizing the need to alleviate the hardships faced by Nigerians, including medical professionals.
Dr. Saheed noted that the hike in fuel prices, coupled with escalating inflation, high electricity tariffs, insecurity, and excessive taxation, has placed an unbearable burden on citizens. He warned that the economic strain caused by the removal of petrol subsidies is affecting all sectors, leading to increased poverty, social unrest, and a rise in stress-related medical conditions.
“The impact of this decision will ripple across all sectors, further deepening the mental, social, and emotional stress that citizens are currently experiencing,” Saheed said. He expressed concern about the soaring inflation rates, noting that the hike in fuel prices would worsen living conditions and contribute to rising rates of depression, hospital admissions, and even mortality.
The NMA also highlighted the exodus of medical professionals from the country due to economic challenges, warning that the situation in the health sector could deteriorate further if immediate action is not taken.
Saheed urged the Federal Government to focus on long-term solutions, such as ending the importation of petrol by revitalizing local refineries and prioritizing economic policies that would promote self-sufficiency. He also stressed the need to address persistent insecurity to create a stable environment conducive to economic growth and reduce poverty.
“We urge the government to expedite efforts to end the importation of petrol and focus on revitalizing our local refineries,” Saheed stated, adding that a review of economic policies is essential to relieve the pressure on citizens.
