The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has announced plans to launch a massive shutdown of all major cities across Nigeria starting on September 15, 2024. The planned protest is a response to the recent hike in fuel prices and what NANS describes as the perceived incompetence of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Director General, Mele Kyari.

In a notice signed by the President of the NANS Senate, Okunomo Henry Adewumi, the student body is demanding an immediate reversal of the fuel price increase and the removal of Mele Kyari from his position as NNPC Director General.

The notice emphasized that the continuous rise in fuel prices has inflicted severe hardship on the Nigerian populace, and the student union can no longer remain silent.

“We write to notify you of an impending massive shutdown of all major cities in Nigeria, effective 15th September 2024, in protest of the recent hike in fuel prices and the gross incompetence of the NPC Director General, Mele Kyari,” the statement read.

NANS has called on all Nigerian students nationwide to join the protest, assuring that the demonstration will be peaceful and lawful.

“We urge you to take necessary measures to maintain law and order during the shutdown, as we assure you that our protest will be peaceful and lawful,” the notice concluded.
