Business tycoon Femi Otedola has celebrated Aliko Dangote’s revolutionary contribution to Nigeria’s energy sector in a moving homage on X, announcing a historic first fuel shipment from the Dangote Refinery. Otedola’s passionate letter praised Dangote’s unwavering vision and drive, drawing a contrast with prior refinery projects’ failures.

“First and foremost, I want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to President Bola Tinubu for his unwavering support and belief in actualizing this monumental achievement under his administration,” Otedola began. “This day belongs to every Nigerian who has dared to dream of a better future. Congratulations to our great nation—today, we all stand a little taller.”

Reflecting on a shared journey that began 25 years ago, Otedola recalled the ambitious plan to acquire stakes in the Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries through the Blue Star Consortium. Despite securing significant shares—20% for himself and 51% for Dangote—their vision was thwarted by a government decision he described as “utterly obnoxious.” Yet, Dangote’s determination never wavered, leading to today’s historic achievement.

Otedola highlighted the stark contrast between Dangote’s success and the dormant state of the Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries, which had failed to live up to their promises despite substantial investments. “While the Kaduna and Port Harcourt refineries have remained dormant, their promise unfulfilled despite billions of dollars spent on so-called turn-around maintenance, you have achieved what many said was impossible.”

The message praised Dangote for not only overcoming skepticism but also for ending Nigeria’s dependency on foreign fuel. “You have liberated us from the chains of economic dependence that have held this nation back for far too long,” Otedola declared. He emphasized that Dangote’s success dealt a significant blow to local oil cabals who had previously profited from Nigeria’s reliance on imported fuel.

Otedola compared Dangote’s impact on the fuel industry to his previous revolution in the cement sector, foreseeing a similar shift in the fuel market. “Ships that once brought in cement turned into rusting relics, scraps of a bygone era. Now, with your refinery in full swing, I foresee a similar fate for fuel imports. The depot owners should take heed—it’s time to dismantle those depots and sell them as scraps while the market is still high.”

Recalling his own venture into the depot business with Zenon, Otedola praised Dangote’s refinery as a beacon of what is possible with vision and perseverance. “Zenon pioneered the diesel business in Nigeria and quickly became the largest in the country, filling the gaps left by our inefficient system. But today, your refinery stands as a beacon of what is possible when one has the audacity to dream and the tenacity to see it through.”

Otedola extended his admiration and respect to Dangote and his team. “Aliko, you have my deepest admiration and respect. Congratulations to you and the entire board, management and staff of Dangote Refinery on this monumental achievement. This is not just a victory for you but for every Nigerian who dares to dream. May this be just the beginning of even greater things to come.”
