The Katsina State High Court has granted bail to 19 protesters arrested during the “End Bad Governance” demonstration in Katsina.
The protesters, who were exercising their constitutional right to peaceful assembly, had been detained.
Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) State Chairman, Ibrahim Umar, commended the court’s decision and vowed to see the case through to its conclusion, ensuring justice is served and the protesters’ rights are protected.
Umar expressed concern over the police’s mistreatment of the protesters, including minors, stating, “It’s unfortunate that the police resorted to brutality and intimidation. We won’t stand for such human rights violations.”
The protesters were arrested during a peaceful demonstration against poor governance in Katsina, where police used excessive force to disperse the crowd.
The NBA’s involvement highlights the organization’s commitment to promoting justice and accountability.
The bail grant is a positive step towards upholding human rights and fundamental freedoms.
As the case progresses, the NBA will closely monitor proceedings to ensure the protesters receive a fair trial.
The incident underscores the need for police reform and accountability to prevent future brutality and intimidation.
