In a strategic move to enhance national identity registration, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and the National Population Commission (NPC) have announced a new partnership aimed at expediting the National Identification Number (NIN) registration for Nigerians. This collaboration seeks to simplify the registration process, ensuring broader and more efficient access to this crucial identification document.

This partnership is particularly timely as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has set a hard deadline of September 14, 2024, for linking Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs) to National Identity Numbers. With over 153 million SIMs already linked—reflecting a compliance rate of 96%, up from 69.7% earlier in the year—this initiative is poised to drive further improvements in national compliance.

In a statement released, Abisoye Coker-Odusote, Director-General of NIMC, emphasized that this collaboration highlights the dedication of both organizations to advancing President Bola Tinubu’s vision of enhancing digital identity and birth registration systems in Nigeria. The focus of the partnership is on accelerating both birth registration and NIN issuance to ensure that every Nigerian, particularly those under 16, can access crucial government services and benefits.

Coker-Odusote stressed the importance of birth registration, describing it as a fundamental right essential for national development. She pointed out that effective digital birth and NIN registration will significantly improve access to education, healthcare, and other social benefits for children and all Nigerians. “Birth registration is not just an individual right; it’s integral to national progress. By scaling up digital registration, we can better provide essential services and opportunities to all citizens,” she stated.
