The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has expressed concern over a viral video circulating on Facebook, which allegedly shows inmates at the Afokang Custodial Centre in Calabar being subjected to inhumane treatment, including being served poorly cooked beans for breakfast.
In a statement released on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, the minister described the incident as a serious violation of the standards of care and dignity that inmates are entitled to under the law.
In response, Tunji-Ojo has ordered a comprehensive and urgent investigation into the matter. He emphasized that anyone found responsible for the alleged mistreatment would be held accountable, underscoring that lapses in the quality of food, sanitation, and overall welfare of inmates would not be tolerated.
The minister further stressed the obligation of the Nigeria Correctional Service to treat inmates with the dignity and respect they deserve. He assured the public that the findings of the investigation would be made public and that necessary disciplinary actions would be taken against those responsible.
“The findings of the investigation will be made public, and necessary disciplinary actions will be taken,” Tunji-Ojo stated in the release.
