FCT Administration Announces Plans for Eight-Meter Deep Underground Rail Line in Abuja
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration, under the leadership of Nyesom Wike, has unveiled plans to construct an eight-meter deep underground rail line connecting the Abuja Metro Station with the Central Business District (CBD) Bus Terminal.
This announcement was made by the Mandate Secretary for Transportation, Rt. Hon. Chinedum Elechi, during the flag-off ceremony for the construction of the CBD Bus/Taxi Terminal on Monday. Elechi highlighted that the terminal, strategically situated at Eagle Square within a key transportation hub, will feature a transit corridor for a future underground light rail system as per the Abuja Master Plan.
“The rail line will be connected from the Metro Station at Central Business District,” Elechi explained. “It will come this way underground, with the space between two buildings allowing the underground train to surface at the station, before continuing its journey underground.”
This development is part of a broader effort to enhance transportation infrastructure in Abuja, ensuring seamless intermodal transfer for commuters between the underground rail line and the bus/taxi terminal above ground.
