A devastating motor accident occurred on Monday night on the Ore-Ondo highway in Ondo State, resulting in the deaths of 16 people. The collision between a Toyota Hiace bus and a truck at Ajue community led to a fire that burned the victims beyond recognition.

Three people sustained serious injuries, while two escaped unharmed. According to eyewitnesses, the accident was caused by overspeeding and reckless overtaking.

Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) State Sector Commander, Ibitoye Samuel, confirmed the incident, stating that it occurred at 8 pm on Monday and rescue operations concluded at 11 pm.

While investigations are ongoing, preliminary findings suggest overspeeding and wrongful overtaking as contributing factors. Commander Samuel emphasized the importance of defensive driving techniques and cautioned motorists against claiming right-of-way.

Overspeeding remains a leading cause of accidents on Nigerian roads, he noted, urging drivers to exercise caution.

The FRSC and emergency services are working to provide support to the affected families and prevent similar incidents in the future.
