The National Hydroelectric Power Producing Areas Development Commission (N-HYPPADEC) has expressed concern over recent floods that destroyed farms in Kebbi and Niger states, cautioning that more intense flooding is expected in the near future.
In a statement, N-HYPPADEC’s Head of Press and Public Affairs, Nura Tanko Wakili, said the Commission’s Managing Director, Abubakar Sadiq Yelwa, sympathizes with affected farmers and notes the impact on food security and livelihoods. The Commission commended the federal government’s prompt response in allocating N3 billion to support victims.
Despite earlier sensitization campaigns, farmlands on flood plains were severely affected. The Commission emphasized the need for strict adherence to safety measures, citing predictions of rising water levels on Rivers Rima and Niger, and reports of increasing water levels on the River Niger system.
N-HYPPADEC urged communities to remain vigilant, monitor updates from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA), and follow instructions from relevant authorities on safety measures to mitigate the impending flood threat.
