Remo Stars have been knocked out of the CAF Champions League following a 2-0 defeat to Morocco’s AS FAR in the second leg of the preliminary round, resulting in a 3-2 aggregate loss.
Despite sustained pressure from Remo Stars throughout the first half, the score remained 0-0 at the break. AS FAR broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute through a goal by Joel Beya. The Moroccan side then sealed their victory with a controversial penalty awarded 12 minutes from full time after Remo Stars’ Ifeanyi Anaemena was penalized for pulling an opponent inside the box. El Amine Zouhzouh calmly converted the spot-kick, ending Remo Stars’ Champions League hopes.
With Remo Stars’ exit, only two Nigerian clubs remain in continental competitions this year: Enugu Rangers in the Champions League and Enyimba in the Confederation Cup. El Kanemi Warriors were also recently eliminated by Dadje of Benin.
