A devastating flood has ravaged six communities in Madagali Local Government Area of Adamawa State, leaving six people dead and over 10 others injured. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the casualties during an on-the-spot assessment.
The affected communities, including Kirchinga, Duhu, and Maiwandu, were hit by severe flooding due to heavy rainfall, which overwhelmed the rivers and caused widespread destruction. The Shuwa Bridge leading to Gulak collapsed, and houses, shops, boreholes, and valuables were destroyed.
About 10,264 people have been displaced, with 1,711 households affected. The majority are taking refuge on higher grounds within the Local Government Area. Eight centers have been established to shelter the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
The state government has approved relief materials for the victims, and the Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa Farauta, has commiserated with the affected people. The local government authority and Nigerian Red Cross are working together to provide aid.
Community leaders and victims are appealing for further assistance, citing the risk of disease outbreak. One victim, Hauwa Bunker, a mother of nine, lamented that her house was washed away, leaving only a plot of land.
