A 40-year-old woman tragically took her own life by setting herself on fire after being divorced by her husband in Garin Mallam village, Guri Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
The incident was confirmed by the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Shiisu, in a statement issued on Friday in Dutse. According to Shiisu, the woman poured petrol on herself and set herself ablaze on Thursday morning.
Police officers from the Guri Divisional Police Headquarters responded to the scene and confirmed the heartbreaking incident. The woman’s charred body was recovered and taken to the hospital before being released to her family for burial.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the woman had been suffering from depression for several months following her divorce.
In light of the incident, Jigawa’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Ahmadu Abdullahi, urged the public to seek guidance and submit their affairs to God during difficult times. He also stressed the importance of seeking advice and counseling from elders to prevent such tragic outcomes.
