Emir of Kano Bags PhD In London

The emir of Kano Muhammadu Sanusi II has successfully defended his Doctorate of Philosophy, PhD thesis from the School of Oriental and African Studies, SOAS University London.

Mr Sanusi defended his thesis with the topic “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform” on Wednesday.

In a message sent to his colleagues, one of the emir’s supervisors, Mashood, said Mr Emir passed his defence without any corrections.

The message reads, “Dear Colleagues, I am pleased to announce that one of my PhD students, HRH Emir Sanusi Lamido Aminu Sanusi, has successfully defended his thesis titled: “Codification of Islamic Family Law as an Instrument of Social Reform: A Case Study of the Emirate of Kano and Comparison with the Kingdom of Morocco” today, 21/08/2024, and was passed without corrections.

“The examiners were Professor Ziba Mir-Hosseini, formerly of the Law School, New York University and currently Professorial Associate at the SOAS Centre of Islamic and Middle Eastern Law [CIMEL], and Dr Dawoud El-Alami, formerly of the University of Oxford and the University of Wales, Lampeter.
“Both examiners praised Emir Sanusi for his erudite scholarship and excellent thesis.

“They acknowledged that the thesis makes an original contribution to knowledge in the area of study.

“The viva was kindly chaired by Professor Martin Lau. Many thanks to both examiners and to the chair of the viva. Very many thanks also to the second supervisor, Professor Lynn Welchman, for her substantial role in the supervision process.”
