Veteran Nigerian singer Alexander Akande, popularly known as 9ice, has disclosed that he drew inspiration from Haitian rapper Wyclef Jean in the early stages of his career. In a recent interview with SPS, 9ice admitted to emulating Wyclef’s sound, but clarified that he wasn’t the only Nigerian artist to do so.
“I was sounding like Wyclef Jean 100 percent at the beginning,” 9ice explained. “While others were also inspired by him, I was considered the best at replicating his style.”
However, 9ice emphasized that he eventually discovered his unique sound, which is a fusion of influences from iconic artists like Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, Bob Marley, Ayinde Barrister, Kwan1, Pasuma, and Obesere.
