Qualcomm has officially announced the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3, the latest addition to its 7-series lineup, following the leak of a datasheet. This new mobile platform is designed to bring high-end features, previously exclusive to flagship devices, to more affordable smartphones.
One of the standout features of the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 is its support for on-device generative AI. This capability allows AI tasks, such as running language models like Baichuan-7B or Llama 2, to be processed directly on the phone, eliminating the need for cloud-based processing. This innovation is expected to result in faster and more responsive AI applications.
Gaming enthusiasts will also benefit from the enhanced Adreno GPU included in the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3. Qualcomm claims a significant 40% increase in GPU performance, which should lead to smoother gameplay and improved visuals, even in demanding mobile games.
The camera system receives a significant upgrade as well, with features like 12-bit triple ISP and 4K sHDR. These enhancements are expected to improve image quality, especially in challenging lighting conditions, and produce more vibrant colours in photos and videos.
In addition to these specific upgrades, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 promises overall performance improvements over its predecessors. Qualcomm states that the CPU is nearly 20% faster, while AI performance has increased by over 30%. The platform is also reported to be 12% more power efficient, which could lead to longer battery life.
Several leading smartphone manufacturers, including Xiaomi, Realme, Samsung, and Sharp, are expected to incorporate the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 in their upcoming devices. Xiaomi is anticipated to be the first to announce a phone powered by this new platform, possibly as soon as next month.
Overall, the Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 represents a substantial upgrade for mid-tier smartphones. By introducing features like on-device AI, improved gaming performance, and enhanced camera capabilities to more affordable phones, Qualcomm is making advanced technology more accessible to a broader range of consumers.
