The Federal Government has announced that transitioning from petrol-driven vehicles to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles will significantly reduce transportation costs across the country.
During a working visit to an International Liquified Natural Gas Energy Conversion, Transportation, and Safety Company in Abuja, the Minister of Transportation, Said Alkali, highlighted the potential economic benefits of this shift. He noted that CNG-powered vehicles could transform the Nigerian economy, as transportation is a critical component of economic activities.
Alkali explained that widespread adoption of CNG would lead to substantial savings in resources and help address the ongoing challenges in public transportation. “By the time this CNG is put in place all over the country, we are going to have a drastic reduction in the cost of transportation,” he said, adding that efforts are underway to establish CNG outlets nationwide, following the existing setups in Abuja.
Senator Ita Enang, former Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, emphasized that CNG-driven vehicles could reduce transportation costs by up to 90%. He pointed out that this initiative aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s strategy to mitigate the impact of removing petroleum subsidies by providing a cost-effective alternative.
Samuel Uko, the Chief Operating Officer of the company, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting the government’s efforts to lower transportation costs. He described the CNG initiative as a crucial part of President Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda,” urging all stakeholders to collaborate in reducing the nation’s inflation rate.
