The Nigeria Police Force has called Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for questioning regarding accusations of terrorism financing, cybercrime, and other related offences. The summons, signed by ACP Adamu Muazu on behalf of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Intelligence Response Team, included a warning that a warrant for Ajaero’s arrest would be issued if he failed to comply.

The letter stated that Ajaero was implicated in an investigation concerning criminal conspiracy, terrorism financing, treasonable felony, subversion, and cybercrime. He was asked to appear for an interview at the Intelligence Response Team office in Abuja tomorrow, August 20, 2024.

At the time of the report, Ajaero had not commented on the situation.

In recent developments, the NLC has accused the government of targeting the organization after a raid on its headquarters by security forces. During a press conference last Thursday, NLC leaders demanded an apology from the police, the return of seized items, and the release of detained individuals, rejecting the police’s explanation for the raid. The government was also criticized for interfering in NLC affairs, including an alleged attempt to shorten the tenure of trade union leaders, which the NLC argued violated labour laws and international conventions.

The police claimed the raid was aimed at capturing an international terrorist suspect, but the NLC dismissed this justification, citing inconsistencies in the police’s account. Further details are expected to follow.
