Justice Mabel Segun-Bello, a judge on the Federal High Court, has disclosed that obtaining the status of a federal judge in Nigeria requires the support of either the political party or the presidency.

At the 2024 Clarity Conference in Abuja on Saturday, with the subject “The Constellation: Gathering of Stars, By Stars, and For Stars,” Justice Segun-Bello gave a speech and shared reflections from her difficult ascent to the top.

As the event’s keynote speaker, she described how difficult it was for her to get from a lowly position to the prestigious post of federal judge, stressing the need of perseverance in achieving success.

Speaking to the conference attendees, she said, “You might have come from a background of extreme poverty. It’s a strong condition, but you have to have the willpower to overcome it.

You will either believe me to be lying or break down in tears if I tell you where I’m from. And keep in mind that I am a federal judge as well as a state judge. “You need the support of a political party or the backing of the presidency to become a federal judge,” she went on. I didn’t have either. This proves that anything is possible when principles are applied globally.

“We organized the Clarity Conference to guide young people from the ideation phase to implementation,” conference convener Atuzie Tuzzi stated, emphasizing the goal of the gathering.

“Due to their early environment and the exposure they had during their school years, many struggle with feelings of inadequacy.”
