In an effort to maintain its successes in the education sector through the EdoBest program and to improve teaching and learning in the state’s basic education sector, the Edo State Government announced on Friday that it has hired 5,500 teachers.

This came right after the state government refuted rumors circulating in the community that a large number of teachers had been let go. It stated that, in reality, more than 75% of the educators involved in its innovative EdoSTAR program—whose contracts were set to expire in April of next year—were forced to take part in the hiring process in order to be hired on as permanent educators in the state.

The Edo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) Executive Chairman, Mrs. Ozavize Salami, made the announcement during a function held at the John Odigie-Oyegun Public Service Academy (JOOPSA) to provide an overview of the board’s activities. She stated that the hiring process was finished and that the hired candidates would receive their employment letters by Monday.

Mrs. Salami went on to explain that Governor Godwin Obaseki ordered the EdoSTAR program, which involves hiring candidates willing to accept part-time teaching positions in their local government areas for a period of three years in order to train them and then hire them later to fill the vacancies, after the state government noticed teacher shortages across the state’s eighteen local government areas.

Salami went on to say that the program, which began in 2022, had been incredibly successful because the people hired not only remained in the rural areas but also demonstrated a level of dedication and commitment to their work that allowed parents and guardians to follow their children’s and wards’ educational journeys. Additionally, the state government, through SUBEB, kept an eye on the teachers from the date on the teaching tablet devices that they were provided.

She claims, “Since the program is implemented in all of the state’s elementary schools, Edo Best, which debuted in 2018, has helped the state gain a lot of popularity. And as a result, we have successfully developed an accountability framework and benefited much from technology.
