The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Osun State has called on its members to maintain peace and set a positive example as the party prepares to hold its primary elections. This appeal was made by the Osun PDP Chairman, Sunday Bisi, in a statement released on Friday.
The primary election, scheduled for Saturday, August 17, 2024, will determine the party’s candidates for councillor positions across the state’s 332 wards. Additionally, the chairmanship primary election will take place on Monday, August 19, 2024, in all 30 local government headquarters in Osun State.
These primaries are crucial as the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) has set Saturday, February 22, 2025, as the date for local government elections in the state.
Bisi urged aspirants and their supporters to cooperate fully with the electoral officers and security personnel overseeing the primaries. He warned that the State Working Committee of the party would not tolerate any acts of violence during or after the exercise.
“I urge supporters of all prospective candidates of our party to avail themselves of the dictates of the law and guidelines of our party in their conduct in the primaries tomorrow and Monday,” Bisi stated. “There is no room for violence of any form in a family like that of the PDP and especially a constitutional exercise of this nature.”
Bisi assured that the party leadership had implemented necessary measures to ensure a smooth primary process, in line with directives from the state’s governor, Ademola Jackson Nurudeen Adeleke, during the last stakeholders meeting.
“We are confident that this exercise will produce the best candidates and ensure victory for our great party in the coming local government election in the state,” Bisi added. He also emphasized that any aspirant found violating party guidelines, the electoral act, or the constitution during the primaries would face disqualification, regardless of their status.
