National Population Commission (NPC) Chairman, Hon. Nasir Isa Kwarra, has reiterated the commission’s dedication to bolstering Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) systems, a crucial foundation for legal identity and inclusive governance. At a press briefing in Abuja, Kwarra emphasized the significance of the 2024 Africa CRVS Day, established in 2018 to raise awareness about the importance of timely registration of vital events like births and deaths.
Kwarra stressed that a robust CRVS system is vital for ensuring legal identity, protecting civil rights, and accessing social services. This year’s theme, “Strengthening the Linkage of Civil Registration and Vital Statistics to Legal Identity Systems through Digitalization for Enhanced Inclusion,” aligns with Nigeria’s efforts to leverage digital technology to improve the CRVS system.
Kwarra highlighted the importance of linking civil registration and legal identity systems, noting that legal identity, beginning with birth registration, is a fundamental human right that enables access to essential services like education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. He also emphasized the role of digitalization in enhancing data accuracy, security, and accessibility, ensuring no citizen is left behind.
