In the 2024 May/June West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), 503,275 applicants failed both English Language and Mathematics, according to the West African Examinations Council (WAEC).
Amos Dangut, the head of the council’s Nigeria office, reported that 1,805,216 people took the test. Only 1,301,941 candidates, according to Dangut, received credits and above in a minimum of five disciplines, including math and English.
He revealed this in a statement on Monday, August 12, when the results of the 2024 WASSCE were made public, according to Daily Trust. As stated in the announcement, 1,301,941 candidates made up 72.12% of the total number of candidates who took the test.
The statistical examination of the candidates’ performance showed a decline in performance of 7.69 percent as opposed to the 79.81 percent obtained in 2023. Dangut further stated that 628,820, or 48.30% of the candidates, were men, while 673,121, or 51.70%, were women, as reported by The Sun.
“A comparison of the percentage of candidates in this category in WASSCE for School 2023 and 2024, reveals that in this year’s (2024) WASSCE, there is a 7.69% decrease in performance (that is, those who obtained credit and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics, was 79.81%).”
