The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced that the country is on the path to becoming self-sufficient in the production of military hardware. This was revealed by the Minister of Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, during a briefing on Monday as part of the activities marking the 60th anniversary of the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON).
Dr. Matawalle emphasized that through collaboration and innovation, DICON has solidified its role as a key player in Nigeria’s defense sector. He noted that as DICON continues to advance, its contributions will be vital for the nation’s security and economic growth.
As part of the celebrations, the maiden edition of the Africa Defence Industries Conference (ADIC) will be launched. Scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday at the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua Centre in Abuja, the conference aims to bring together industry leaders, policymakers, and stakeholders to collaborate, share insights, and explore future advancements in defense technology across Africa. The theme for the event, “DICON @ 60: Future Frontiers in Africa’s Defence Technology,” highlights the corporation’s commitment to enhancing defense capabilities through strategic partnerships and technological innovations.
Dr. Matawalle also highlighted the significance of the new DICON Act 2023, which has the potential to significantly boost Nigeria’s national development and security by fostering local production of defense equipment. This, in turn, could enhance foreign exchange earnings, create jobs for skilled Nigerians, and reduce the country’s reliance on foreign imports for military hardware.
Reflecting on DICON’s history, the minister noted that since its establishment in 1964, the corporation has been central to Nigeria’s defense manufacturing, starting with small arms and ammunition production before expanding into the manufacture of military vehicles, artillery, and other defense equipment. Despite various challenges, DICON has remained committed to the goal of self-reliance and enhancing national security.
The minister also invited innovators, startups, and research institutions to participate in the Defence Innovation Challenge, aimed at presenting innovative solutions to bolster national and regional security. The anniversary celebrations, which began on August 9, are expected to usher in a new era for DICON as a military industrial complex, following the recent signing of the new DICON Act by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on November 23, 2023.
