The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has commenced a thorough investigation following an incident at Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA) in Lagos, where a Nigerian passport was reportedly destroyed. The event, which was captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has drawn significant attention from both the public and officials.
The individual implicated in the incident has been identified as Mrs. Favour Igiebor, holder of passport number A11990869. Kenneth Udo, Public Relations Officer for the NIS, confirmed that the Comptroller General of Immigration has mandated a detailed inquiry into the matter. The NIS is working to determine the precise circumstances that led to the destruction of the passport.
According to reports by NTA, Mrs. Igiebor is expected to undergo further questioning to clarify the details surrounding the incident. The NIS has underscored the seriousness of the situation, noting that if the allegations are substantiated, Mrs. Igiebor’s actions may breach Section 10(b) of the Immigration Act 2015 (as amended). This section specifically prohibits the deliberate destruction of Nigerian travel documents.
Penalties for such violations are outlined in Section 10(h) of the same Act, which includes fines and potential imprisonment. Mr. Udo reiterated the NIS’s commitment to strictly enforcing the Immigration Act to safeguard national security and preserve the integrity of Nigeria’s legal and diplomatic instruments.
