Governor Bala Muhammed of Bauchi State has declared that his party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is considering appointing President Bola Tinubu as its campaign director for the 2027 elections. Muhammed’s statement came in light of the President’s policies which he claims are contributing to widespread dissatisfaction and economic hardship.
Speaking at the launch of the PDP’s local government election campaign at the Government House in Bauchi on Wednesday, Governor Muhammed expressed deep concerns over the current state of the nation’s economy and governance. He lamented that there is significant “hunger and anger” among the populace due to failing developmental policies and rising unemployment.
“The issues of unemployment, failing educational systems, and ineffective federal policies are causing widespread discontent,” Muhammed said. “These problems are self-inflicted by the current administration. I am calling on President Tinubu to reassess and change his policies because they are clearly not working.”
Muhammed further criticized the federal government’s handling of economic relief measures, particularly the distribution of palliatives and funds to state governors. He contended that while the federal government generates substantial revenue, the financial support allocated to the states is insufficient.
“I have noted with concern the federal government’s claims of providing 70 trucks and over N500 million in assistance, but this is negligible compared to their overall revenue,” Muhammed said. “The policies they have implemented are causing more harm than good. Why are they introducing measures that only exacerbate the suffering of the people?”
The governor also addressed the issue of naira devaluation, attributing the inability of the existing minimum wage to cover basic necessities, such as a bag of maize, to the Central Bank of Nigeria’s policies.
“Due to the devaluation of the naira, our current minimum wage no longer suffices to meet basic needs,” Muhammed stated. “This is a direct result of poor economic management and policy decisions by the federal government.”
