Nigeria’s Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Dr. Bosun Tijani, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR). He announced this on his social media on August 7, 2024.
UNITAR is an autonomous institution within the United Nations framework, aimed at enhancing the organisation’s effectiveness in achieving its main objectives. Dr. Tijani will collaborate with other board members to develop principles and policies guiding the Institute’s activities and operations.
Dr. Tijani expressed his gratitude for the appointment by the UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, stating, “I am honoured to be invited by the United Nations Secretary-General to serve on the Board of Trustees of UNITAR. This invitation is a win for Nigeria and acknowledges the significant strides made by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in promoting economic and social development. It validates our efforts in building capacity and bridging the technology skills gap through initiatives like 3MTTNigeria, the world’s largest talent accelerator.”
The United Nations Institute for Training and Research praised Dr. Tijani for his visionary leadership, technological passion, and dedication to fostering a thriving startup ecosystem. His work inspires the next generation of entrepreneurs in Nigeria and beyond.
The 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) program, an initiative of the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation & Digital Economy, is a crucial component of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, aiming to create 2 million digital jobs by 2025. It focuses on building Nigeria’s technical talent to power the digital economy and position the country as a net exporter of talent.
UNITAR serves over 370,000 beneficiaries annually, conducting nearly 1,000 training and research activities as the dedicated training arm of the United Nations.
