Popular comedian Kenny Blaq has clarified his role in the music comedy genre in Nigeria, debunking the notion that he pioneered the field. In a recent interview with Hip TV, Blaq acknowledged the contributions of predecessors like the late Gbenga Adeboye, CD John, and others who paved the way for music comedy in Nigeria.
While Blaq didn’t start the genre, he claimed to have brought a fresh approach, infusing the “Wizkid and Davido vibe” into his music comedy style. He explained, “My approach made mine different. I did mashups, covers, told stories, and was consistent.”
Blaq distinguished his style from those who came before him, noting that they focused on specific genres like Igbo or Yoruba music. In contrast, he experimented with various genres and storytelling through comedy.
The comedian humbly stated, “I didn’t start music comedy, but I’ve contributed to making it strong in this part of the world.”
