Seven Polish nationals have been detained in connection with the recent violent nationwide protests against hunger and economic hardship in Kano State. The Department of State Services (DSS) disclosed this information during a meeting with the diplomatic corps, chaired by Minister of Foreign Affairs Yusuf Tugar on Wednesday.

The DSS representative clarified that the arrest of the Polish citizens was prompted by their display of foreign flags during the protests in the North-West region. The official emphasized that these individuals are currently under investigation but assured that their detention was not part of a targeted operation against Polish nationals.

The meeting, which also included Minister of Information Mohammed Idris, a representative of the National Security Adviser, the Inspector General of Police, and the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Foreign Affairs, was convened in response to the ongoing nationwide protests that began on August 1, 2024.

The DSS representative reassured the diplomatic community that the situation is being handled with the utmost transparency and that the investigation is focused on understanding the role of the foreign nationals in the protests.
