Comr. Blessing Alims, the University of Calabar’s (UNICAL) first female president of the Student Union Government (SUG), has made headlines with her recent appointment of fifty advisors. This historic move follows her election in June 2024, marking a significant milestone in the university’s 49-year history.

Alims, who has already attracted significant attention on social media for breaking this longstanding gender barrier, unveiled her team of advisors shortly after assuming office. The announcement has ignited a wave of reactions online, reflecting both support and scrutiny of her leadership decisions.

In a post shared on her Facebook page, Alims elaborated on the selection process for her advisory team: “After carefully examining and assessing the following individuals based on their conduct, credibility, enthusiasm, transparency, and commitment to the Students’ Union Government’s progress and advancement, I am pleased to announce the following appointments for the efficient operation of the Blessing Alims-Led Administration.”

The appointed advisors will play pivotal roles in various aspects of student governance, with their responsibilities ranging from academic advocacy to student welfare and organizational development. This large-scale appointment underscores Alims’ commitment to fostering a diverse and competent team to support her vision for the SUG.

The move has sparked a broad discussion on social media, with users weighing in on the potential impact of such a large advisory team. Some praise the decision as a strategic approach to ensure comprehensive representation and effective governance, while others question the necessity and management of a team of this size.
