Recent developments in student loan distribution have provided a significant financial boost to higher education in Nigeria. The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced that it has authorized student loans exceeding N2,530,235,750. This substantial funding is aimed at supporting over 22,000 students across the country, particularly those attending six prestigious universities.

The update, delivered by Nasir Ayitogo, Head of Media and Public Relations for NELFUND, underscores the organization’s commitment to enhancing access to education in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s promise to improve educational opportunities for Nigerians. The announcement was made in Abuja on Friday, marking a key milestone in the ongoing efforts to alleviate financial barriers for students.

“This program is designed to ease the financial burden on students, ensuring that those in genuine need can continue their education without interruption,” Ayitogo stated. He highlighted that this initiative is part of a broader strategy to support students and educational institutions, contributing to a more equitable academic environment.

So far, the NELFUND has distributed a substantial portion of these funds, with six out of twelve targeted institutions receiving full payments for their students’ institutional fees. The total amount disbursed to these universities is approximately N2,026,163,340. Institutions such as the University of Ibadan (UI), Bayero University Kano, University of Maiduguri, and Federal University Dutsin-Ma are among the beneficiaries, alongside the University of Ilorin (Unilorin) and the University of Benin (Uniben).

Ayitogo confirmed that additional payments are scheduled for the coming week, with six more institutions set to receive their funds. This additional support aims to further ensure that Nigerian students can pursue their academic goals with financial stability and reduced stress.
