The Nigerian government has issued a travel alert to its citizens planning to visit the United Kingdom following recent violent riots in the country.
In a statement on Monday, August 5, 2024, Eche Abu-Obe, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, advised Nigerians to exercise extreme caution due to the ongoing unrest.
England is currently experiencing severe anti-immigrant and far-right violence, with towns and cities being overtaken by mobs attacking hotels housing asylum seekers and mosques, clashing with police, and causing widespread destruction. These riots erupted after a mass stabbing in Southport, near Liverpool, where three young girls were killed during a dance class.
Before the suspect, Axel Rudakubana, 17, was identified, far-right influencers falsely claimed he was a Muslim asylum seeker, inciting further violence and spreading Islamophobic sentiment.
The foreign affairs ministry’s statement highlighted the heightened risk of violence and disorder following the tragic event, urging Nigerians to:
- Avoid political processions, protests, rallies, or marches
- Steer clear of crowded areas and large gatherings
- Remain vigilant and self-aware at all times
