The chairman of Southern Ijaw Local Government Area in Bayelsa, Target Segibo, has urged individuals seeking chieftaincy titles to refrain from actions that could ignite conflict.

In an interview on Monday, Mr. Segibo addressed the ongoing chieftaincy dispute in Amassoma, a community within the local government area. He emphasized that such disputes should not be allowed to sow discord.

“The council will not tolerate any acts that lead to a breakdown of law and order in the community,” Segibo stated. “We are committed to ensuring peace in the local government area. All factions involved in this tussle must follow the path of peace.”

Mr. Segibo expressed concern over the divisive activities of the factions involved in the chieftaincy dispute, which he said were already tearing the community apart. He urged all parties to cancel their previously scheduled meetings at the community town hall to prevent potential clashes.

The council chairman highlighted that the local government is working closely with security agencies and other stakeholders to maintain safety and ensure lasting peace in the community.

“We should always live in peace. No meaningful development can thrive in an environment engulfed in crisis,” Segibo concluded.
