The Kano State Government has arraigned 632 individuals accused of vandalizing public facilities and looting amid ongoing hunger protests in the state. The protests, which have spread across various locations including Dakata, Rimin Kebbe, State Road, and Under Bridge, have seen demonstrators chanting anti-government slogans and waving Russian flags.
Sanusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, the spokesperson for the Kano State Governor, stated that the suspects were apprehended for their involvement in the destruction of public assets. He emphasized that the state government’s commitment to maintaining peace and order is firm, and that those found guilty of vandalism will face legal consequences.
Tofa also announced that the government is planning extensive training programs for youths in various trades to promote self-reliance and reduce the chances of them being used to instigate disorder. Additionally, a special committee of inquiry will be established to investigate the causes behind the recent violence and the looting of public buildings.
He clarified that the protesters carrying Russian flags are not affiliated with the government and called on security agencies to identify those responsible and uncover their motives. He noted that genuine protesters in the state had already submitted their grievances to the government, which will be forwarded to President Bola Tinubu.
