Protesters clashed with security personnel at the Top Medical Junction in Tunga, Minna, Niger State, and gunshots were fired into the air. The incident broke out when demonstrators attempted to block the busy road, triggering a quick response from the police.
Earlier, police had deployed teargas to disperse the crowd, but the protesters regrouped and resumed their efforts to obstruct the road. In response, officers fired warning shots into the air to disperse the crowd and prevent further escalation.
When our correspondent arrived on the scene, it was evident that the situation was under control, with policemen and local vigilantes actively removing the stones and debris used by the protesters to block a section of the road. The area had been a focal point for unrest, with earlier protests in the year at the popular Kpakungu Roundabout on the Minna-Bida road.
In response to the unrest, a significant security presence has been established in perceived hot spots throughout the city. This includes personnel from the police, military, Nigeria Immigration Service, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, all working together to maintain order and prevent further disruptions.
