Rtn. Rosemond Favour Uche, President of the Rotary Club of Abuja, Maitama, has called upon Nigerians to extend their support to breast cancer patients residing in neglected and underserved communities. Speaking at a recent treatment program held in Guidna Village, a suburb of Abuja, Uche emphasized the severe financial strain that the cost of diagnosis and care places on indigent women, many of whom are key family providers.
During her address, Uche highlighted the daunting challenges faced by these women, noting that both surgery and chemotherapy involve significant expenses. “While surgery is costly, chemotherapy presents its own set of difficulties,” she stated. “We hope that our contributions will provide these women with the necessary support to continue their battle against cancer.”
The treatment program in Guidna Village is part of the Rotary Club’s broader commitment to humanitarian work. Uche underscored the importance of partnerships with individuals and organizations dedicated to breast cancer care, stressing that such collaborations deserve the support of all Nigerians.
The choice of Guidna Village for the cancer screening and treatment initiative was deliberate. Uche explained that the Rotary Club’s collaboration with Silver Cross Hospital, which offers free breast cancer surgeries, aligns with Rotary’s mission to assist those in dire need. “We are here because of our partnership with Silver Cross Hospital, which has been instrumental in providing free surgeries to those who cannot afford them,” she said.
Uche praised the Medical Director of Silver Cross Hospital for his commitment to serving underprivileged areas. “His dedication to offering free surgeries in areas like Guidna Village, rather than wealthier neighborhoods such as Asokoro or Maitama, demonstrates his humanitarian spirit,” Uche noted. “By focusing on grassroots communities, he has significantly impacted those who are most in need.”
