The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Bayelsa State has called on its members to shun the planned nationwide protest scheduled for August 1, urging them instead to participate in a counter-protest rally in support of President Bola Tinubu.

Addressing the press in Yenagoa on Wednesday, Bayelsa APC Chairman, Dennis Otiotio, emphasized that any party member caught participating in the nationwide protest would face sanctions. He underscored the party’s stance, stating that while the APC respects the right to peaceful protest, it is committed to ensuring that any demonstrations remain within the bounds of the law.

Otiotio drew parallels to the EndSARS protests of 2020 and recent unrest in Kenya, warning that protests can quickly spiral into violence if not conducted lawfully. He noted that the APC in Bayelsa, from the ward to the state level, had collectively decided to avoid the nationwide protest in favor of supporting democratic principles.

“We are democrats and progressives, and we believe in the right to peaceful protest within the law. However, in the interest of democracy and our nation, we urge our members to focus on a solidarity rally to support the government and policies of President Tinubu,” Otiotio said.

He added that the party had already sought permission from the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Joint Task Force (JTF) to organize the pro-Tinubu rally.
