Omoyele Sowore, former presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has openly challenged Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), regarding his statement that Abuja would not be available for protests on August 1.

In a post on his X handle on Friday, Sowore asserted that the proposed nationwide protests would indeed commence in Abuja. He stated, “It is starting from and in Abuja!”

Sowore’s declaration follows Wike’s announcement that August 1 had been designated for the chairmen of the six Area Councils of the FCT to present certificates of recognition to their traditional rulers. Wike issued this warning during a briefing on the outcome of the FCT Security Council meeting in Abuja on Thursday.

The planned nationwide protest, tagged #EndBadGovernance, is scheduled to take place from August 1 to August 10, 2024. Organizers of the protest have voiced their concerns over widespread hunger and inflation in the country, rallying citizens to demand better governance.
