The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has announced the arrest of 13 individuals suspected of illegal mining activities. The arrests occurred on Wednesday, July 24, 2024, in the Asokoro area of Abuja. The operation also led to the seizure of five trucks carrying large quantities of coal and kaolin.
According to Dele Oyewale, EFCC spokesperson, the suspects were apprehended based on credible intelligence indicating their involvement in transporting substantial amounts of coal and kaolin from Nassarawa State to a designated site in Kaduna State. The operation was part of the EFCC’s ongoing efforts to combat illegal mining and related activities across the country.
“The suspects were intercepted and apprehended while transporting the minerals in five trucks,” Oyewale said. “This operation was conducted in response to reliable information linking these individuals to illegal mining activities. The trucks were loaded with significant quantities of coal and kaolin, which are valuable resources often targeted by illegal miners.”
The suspects are currently undergoing thorough interrogation by EFCC operatives. Upon the completion of the investigation, they are expected to face charges in court. The EFCC emphasized its commitment to eradicating illegal mining operations, which pose environmental risks and undermine the nation’s economy.
The commission’s crackdown on illegal mining comes as part of a broader initiative to address the environmental and economic impacts of such activities. Illegal mining not only depletes valuable mineral resources but also contributes to deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution.
