Popular Nigerian comedian and skit maker Chukwuebuka Amuzie, better known as Brain Jotter, has responded to recent controversies surrounding the viral resurgence of Mike Ejeagha’s 1983 hit song “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo.” The song has gained renewed popularity thanks to a trending dance challenge created by Brain Jotter.
The dance challenge has made a significant impact on social media, with the video amassing 29.1 million views and over 30,000 comments on Instagram, and 19.6 million views with more than 23,000 comments on TikTok. This resurgence has brought Mike Ejeagha, the 93-year-old music legend, back into the spotlight, with many netizens expressing their admiration and support for him.
In light of the song’s renewed fame, Brain Jotter generously offered N2 million to Ejeagha, a gesture that some viewed as a commendable act of goodwill. However, this gesture has also sparked accusations of copyright infringement from others who felt that Brain Jotter’s actions might have exploited Ejeagha’s work without proper compensation.
Addressing these concerns in a viral video on Tuesday, Brain Jotter sought to clarify his position. “For those thinking we ripped him off or are making money from this whole thing, I understand your concerns and they are very valid,” he stated.
He continued, “I appreciate the fact that you want him to get value for his hard work, which is very valid, and I want you to understand that you are doing something good.”
