Reinstated Edo Deputy Governor Philips Shaibu Indicates Imminent Shift to APC

The reinstated Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philips Shaibu, announced on Friday that he considers himself an unofficial member of the All Progressives Congress (APC). He explained that the only reason he remains with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is due to his yet-to-be-official resignation from the ruling party in Edo State.

During an appearance on Arise TV’s morning show, Shaibu addressed questions regarding his support for the APC governorship candidate in Edo. He maintained that his allegiance to the PDP had waned significantly.

“In the PDP now, everybody can support whoever they like. On the issue of supporting a candidate, the constitution guarantees that you can support who you like and you can belong to any political party,” Shaibu stated. “My spirit has left the PDP.”

Shaibu’s comments have stirred political conversations, highlighting the fluidity and evolving dynamics within Edo State’s political landscape. His open endorsement of the APC candidate while still officially a PDP member underscores the complexities and often personal nature of political affiliations in Nigeria.

Shaibu elaborated on his position, saying that his decision to support the APC candidate aligns with his personal and political convictions. He emphasized that the constitution supports freedom of association, allowing individuals to support candidates of their choice regardless of party affiliations.

“The constitution is clear on this matter. It allows for freedom of association and political expression. This means that every citizen, including political office holders, has the right to support any candidate they believe in,” Shaibu remarked. “This principle is fundamental to our democracy and should be respected.”

Political analysts have noted that Shaibu’s declaration could signify a significant shift in Edo State politics, potentially influencing other PDP members who may share his sentiments. It also raises questions about the future strategies of both the PDP and APC as they prepare for upcoming elections.

Shaibu’s move has not gone unnoticed by party leaders. While the PDP has yet to issue an official statement regarding his comments, sources within the party suggest that there may be efforts to reconcile differences and retain key members ahead of crucial elections.

Meanwhile, the APC has welcomed Shaibu’s support, viewing it as a positive development. APC representatives in Edo State have expressed optimism that Shaibu’s alignment with their candidate will bolster their chances in the governorship race.

“The APC is pleased with Deputy Governor Shaibu’s support. His experience and influence in Edo State are invaluable, and we believe this will significantly enhance our campaign efforts,” an APC spokesperson commented.
