The Imo State Government has halted illegal mining operations, particularly in the Umukoto-Nekede-Ihiagwa-FUTO area, which leads to the banks of the Nworie and Otamiri Rivers. This action aims to protect the environment from ecological challenges.
Ernest Ibejiako, the Commissioner for Industries, Mining, and Solid Minerals, issued the order while addressing dredgers at the site. He gave the operators two days to remove their equipment and dismantle their working tools from the area. He warned that anyone found mining after this period would be arrested, prosecuted, and have their equipment confiscated.
The Commissioner also instructed all operators to register with the ministry to be relocated to a more suitable area for close and regular supervision. Ibejiako noted that indiscriminate mining activities are a major cause of the ecological problems the state is experiencing.
