Nigerian singer Simi has shared why she has moved away from her reputation for witty, savage comebacks on Twitter, attributing the change to the platform’s evolving culture.
In a recent episode of the Zero Conditions Podcast, Simi discussed her music and the broader music industry. When asked why she toned down her “savage” responses, Simi clarified that her goal was never to be intentionally savage but to respond authentically. She explained, “I feel like I still am sometimes; maybe it’s because I’m not on Twitter as much as I used to be. I don’t see it as being ‘savage’ because my goal is not to be savage.”
Simi noted that while people often perceive her responses as “clapping back,” she rarely replies compared to the amount of online content she encounters. She emphasized, “That’s how I am in real life, though; I’d say I’m very quick with it. If someone says sorry, I would say sorry for yourself; I’m a joker as well.”
Reflecting on the changes in Twitter’s culture, Simi said, “Twitter isn’t the way it used to be; it used to be better. I don’t think it’s because people are now awake, though. I feel like Twitter has become a competition for who can be the most toxic or the loudest person, and I don’t have fun with it like I used to. Now I hardly go on it.”
Simi’s comments highlight the shift in social media dynamics and her preference for more genuine interactions both online and offline.
