Several corps members were injured after a hostel wall collapsed at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Ise-Emure, Ekiti State.

On Friday morning, the wall separating the bathroom of one of the female dormitories collapsed, injuring corps members who were about to take a bath. The incident, which occurred during the three-week mandatory orientation for their one-year national youth service, caused immediate panic and concern among the camp’s residents.

The victims were swiftly transported to the camp clinic for initial medical attention. Some were later moved to nearby hospitals for additional care. The exact number of injured corps members remains undisclosed, but reports indicate that several individuals sustained varying degrees of injury.

The NYSC administration has urged calm and assured the public that the situation is under control. In a statement posted on its official handle on X (formerly Twitter), @officialnyscng, on Friday, the NYSC management addressed the incident. “Management wishes to inform the general public about the collapsed convenience that occurred in the early hours of today, Friday 12th July 2024, at Ekiti State Orientation Camp in Ise-Orun, Emure Ekiti, that the situation is under control,” the statement read.

In the wake of the incident, the NYSC authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. Preliminary reports suggest that structural weaknesses and poor maintenance may have contributed to the accident. The management has promised to take immediate steps to ensure the safety of all corps members and prevent future occurrences.

Parents and guardians of the affected corps members have expressed their concerns and called for improved safety measures at the orientation camps nationwide. One parent, who wished to remain anonymous, stated, “We entrust our children to the NYSC with the expectation that they will be safe. Incidents like this are deeply troubling, and we urge the authorities to take all necessary measures to prevent such occurrences in the future.”

The NYSC scheme, established in 1973, aims to foster national unity and integration by deploying graduates to different parts of the country for a year of service. However, the program has faced criticism over the years for various safety and welfare issues affecting corps members.

In response to the latest incident, advocacy groups have called for a comprehensive review of the safety standards at NYSC camps. They argue that proper maintenance of facilities and regular safety inspections are essential to protect the well-being of the corps members.

The Ekiti State government has also weighed in on the situation, with officials pledging support for the injured corps members and promising to collaborate with the NYSC to enhance camp infrastructure. In a statement, the Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Adekunle Adeniyi, said, “We are committed to ensuring that our youth service camps are safe and conducive for all participants. We will work closely with the NYSC to address any lapses and improve the conditions at the camps.”

As the investigation continues, the NYSC management has reassured corps members and their families that all necessary steps are being taken to ensure their safety and well-being. They have also encouraged the corps members to remain focused on their orientation activities and to report any concerns promptly to the camp authorities.
