Former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has on Friday, addressed the reactions to his recent tweet, which some interpreted as a cryptic message directed at unnamed individuals, including President Bola Tinubu and other political figures. El-Rufai’s tweet featured the Islamic phrase “inna lillahi wa inna ilaihir raji’un,” meaning “from God we all came and to Him we shall all return.”
In a follow-up tweet, El-Rufai sought to clarify his intentions and urged calm among those who were unsettled or distressed by his message. He emphasized that the phrase is a reminder of ultimate accountability and divine judgment, rather than a coded message targeting specific individuals.
“It seems to me that my translation of ‘inna lillahi wa inna ilaihir raa ji’un’ meaning ‘from God we all came and to Him we shall all return’ has been reinterpreted by those obsessed with reading my message as a ‘cryptic message’ to some unnamed persons. It seems to me that the reminder has unsettled some people and distressed a lot more,” El-Rufai tweeted.
He continued, “It is neither a cryptic nor a coded message. Just a reminder of ultimate accountability and judgment of God, not that of infallible humans. I will end it here and today as I do not want to unsettle or distress anyone. Enjoy the weekend.”
El-Rufai’s initial tweet sparked widespread speculation and debate across social media platforms, with many users attempting to decode its intended recipients and underlying message. The former governor’s clarification aimed to dispel these speculations and refocus the discussion on the core principle of accountability and the inevitability of divine judgment.
The phrase “inna lillahi wa inna ilaihir raji’un” is commonly recited by Muslims upon hearing news of death or calamity, serving as a reminder of life’s transient nature and the ultimate return to God. El-Rufai’s use of this phrase was intended to highlight the importance of reflecting on one’s actions and the moral responsibilities we all bear.
In the context of Nigeria’s political landscape, El-Rufai’s reminder of accountability carries significant weight. As the country grapples with various socio-political challenges, calls for integrity, transparency, and responsibility in leadership have become increasingly prevalent. By invoking this religious tenet, El-Rufai underscores the need for leaders and citizens alike to be mindful of their actions and their broader implications.
President Bola Tinubu and other political leaders have yet to publicly respond to El-Rufai’s clarification. However, the incident has sparked conversations about the role of religious and moral principles in governance and public service. Some commentators have praised El-Rufai for his timely reminder, while others have urged political figures to heed the call for greater accountability and ethical conduct.
As the discourse continues, El-Rufai’s message serves as a poignant reminder of the higher standards to which leaders and individuals should aspire. By emphasizing ultimate accountability to God, he calls on everyone to act with integrity, compassion, and a sense of duty towards the collective good.
