The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday confirmed President Bola Tinubu’s nominees to serve in the Police Service Commission. The confirmation followed a report presented by the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Police Affairs, Ahmed Mallam-Maidori Abdulhamid, who affirmed that the nominees were thoroughly screened and deemed competent for the positions.
Senator Seriake Dickson praised the appointment of one nominee, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) Hashiru Salihu Argungu, as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, citing his extensive experience in the police force. “Mr. Senate President, Distinguished Colleagues, I am a member of the Committee that screened the nominees and I can attest to their competence, particularly the former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Argungu, who has seen it all while he served in the Police. Bringing his wealth of experience to bear on the Police Service Commission was the best thing to do,” Dickson stated.
Former Senate President Dr. Ahmad Lawan also commended the Committee for their detailed report. Subsequently, Senate President Godswill Akpabio dissolved the plenary into the Committee of the Whole, leading to the confirmation of the nominees.
The confirmed nominees are:
– DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu – Chairman
– Chief Onyemuche Nnamani – Secretary
– Barrister Fredrick Taiwo Lakanu – Member
Following the confirmation, Senate President Akpabio emphasized the importance of effective oversight by the Senate Committee on Police Affairs. He urged the Committee to ensure that the Police Service Commission (PSC) operates harmoniously with the office of the Inspector General of Police, particularly in the recruitment of police officers to enhance national security.
