The Simon Ekpa-led Biafra Republic Government In-Exile (BRGIE) has firmly rejected the recent establishment of the Livestock Development Ministry by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Ekpa, addressing the public on social media, condemned the speed and priority given to the creation of the ministry, stating that it would not be allowed to operate within Biafra territories. He warned the Nigerian government against including Biafra land in any initiatives related to the new ministry.

“If you create it in any Biafra territory, we will not allow it. Do not include Biafra territory in your so-called livestock,” Ekpa asserted. He also highlighted that the Fulani called for the creation of this ministry on June 23, 2024, and it was swiftly established by the President on July 9, 2024.

The creation of the ministry has sparked a mix of reactions across the country. Critics argue that it adds unnecessary burden to the already high cost of governance. Kalu Aja, a financial analyst, criticized the move, stating that the government is more focused on re-election than budgetary discipline.

Conversely, some groups have expressed support for the ministry. The All Farmers Association of Nigeria believes that the establishment of the ministry could help resolve longstanding conflicts between farmers and herders.

As the debate continues, the creation of the Livestock Development Ministry brings the total number of ministries in Nigeria to 50, increasing the recurrent expenditure burden on the government.
