President Bola Tinubu has been re-elected as the Chairman of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government. The extension of his mandate was confirmed at the 65th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government, held on Sunday in Abuja.

President Tinubu’s initial election to this prominent position took place in Guinea-Bissau on July 9, 2023. Since then, he has been instrumental in steering the regional body towards its goals and aspirations.

In his acceptance speech, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude for the continued trust and support from his fellow West African leaders. He emphasized his commitment to consolidating the values of democracy and upholding the interests of ECOWAS, which is set to celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2025.

“The task ahead is challenging, but with our collective effort, we can ensure that democracy thrives in our region,” President Tinubu stated. “We must remain steadfast in our commitment to the principles that bind us together as a regional body.”

As part of his renewed mandate, President Tinubu announced the appointment of the President of Senegal, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, and the President of Togo, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, as Special Envoys to Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger Republic. These countries are currently under military rule following recent coups. The special envoys will play crucial roles in diplomatic efforts to restore civilian governance and stability in these nations.
